Traumatic brain injuries are a major cause of death and disability in the United States, contributing to about 30 percent of all injury deaths. Those who survive a brain injury may face short-term effects lasting a few days to disabilities which could last the rest of their lives.

© May 31, 2015Several factors present a frightening future for veterans' health care in America. With the U.S. population aging, a greater percentage of Americans will develop Alzheimer's disease. In 10 years, the number of people 65 and older with the devastating disease is expected to jump by 40 percent. An increasing number of those will be veterans whose traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder have made them twice as likely to develop dementia. Read more here. Children's head injuries can be convoluted. There are many misconceptions parents have when it comes to children who have head injuries.
Kevin Walter, M.D., from the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, spoke to Parenting.com to find out what parents really need to know about head injuries that affect between 1.6 and 3.8 million American kids each year. Concussions are brain injuries, so parents should take them seriously.
