MedCity News: Traumatic brain injury video game gets ultimate test (patients)

EmotEd, a therapeutic software business centered on rehabilitation for adults with traumatic brain injuries is recruiting patients next month. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of a scenario-based video game it has developed to support their rehabilitation for Alexithymia or emotional blindness. It hopes to release the results by the end of the year.

Yoga Journal: The Healing Power Of Yoga For Brain Injuries

On December 31, 2009, less than two months before the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, snowboarder Kevin Pearce crashed his head into an icy half pipe in Park City, Utah.

The traumatic brain injury (TBI) brought on a 6-day coma, memory loss, mood swings, and vision problems, but Pearce’s discovery of yoga has helped give him new eyes. Quite literally.

Forbes: Shortfall Of Neurosurgeons Predicted To Treat Common Brain Injury, Study Says

According to a new study by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center, chronic subdural hemorrhage (SDH) will be the most common adult brain condition requiring neurosurgical intervention in the U.S. by 2030. The study also revealed a projected shortage of neurosurgeons to handle the increased number of patients expected to be diagnosed from this condition, typically the result of falls and other trauma.

Philly.com: Exercise's Effect on Brain May Boost Mobility in Old Age Read

Staying physically active as you age may ward off brain damage that can limit mobility, a small study says.

Small areas of brain damage called white matter hyperintensities are seen in MRI scans of many older patients, according to scientists from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Higher levels of this damage have been linked to difficulty walking and other mobility problems, the researchers said.

The Taos News:  Senate OKs bill requiring info on brain injuries for student-athletes

State senators narrowly approved a bill Thursday requiring student-athletes to receive instruction about brain injuries.

The vote was 18-16. Most Republicans and a few Democrats opposed the bill on grounds that it might mimic existing programs or create expenses for school districts and the New Mexico Activities Association.

Children's head injuries can be convoluted. There are many misconceptions parents have when it comes to children who have head injuries.

Kevin Walter, M.D., from the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, spoke to Parenting.com to find out what parents really need to know about head injuries that affect between 1.6 and 3.8 million American kids each year. Concussions are brain injuries, so parents should take them seriously.
